It's getting HOT HOT HOT!!!

No, not the weather.  Although that is a tad warm, it was lunch the other day.

I like Asian food.  There is a new restaurant in a town nearby, and Mom and I had lunch there.  They serve sushi, which I greatly enjoy.  Normally, they have a little sign above each dish, stating what type of dish it is, and hot or not.  Well, they had just put out new dishes of sushi, and hadn't put up the signs yet.

I didn't worry about it too much, I took a couple I recognized, and one 'new' one.  Had my saute'd mushrooms, stir fry veggies, some sweet and sour chicken, and then tried one of the sushi.

Tuna.  Not bad.

Munched on some more veggies, had some tea, then tried the new sushi.

I was so fortunate that I didn't take the sushi in, in one bite, like I usually do.   It was a bit on the large side, and I bit it in half.  And promptly felt my tongue catch fire.  I managed to swallow it whole, and tried not to gag.  HOT, burning sensation, that took a lot of tea, and several bites of veggies and such to deaden the fire.

I told Mom about it, and she said I must have taken in some Wasabi.  I asked what it looked like.  Mom said it was green.  Oh.

I had taken a bite of the side that I thought had cucumber in it.  Obviously, it wasn't cucumber.

I think I will stick with the tuna.  (Or wait until they have the signs up, at least...)

I can't "do" hot foods at all. (hot as in spicy not temperature) The restaurant patrons would have seen a crazy lady going bizerk had it been me that bit into Wasabi. It wouldn't of been pretty.

Oooo Wasabi burn - better than brain freeze. I mixed up a bit of wasabi and soy for dipping on my first date with BF. I didn't taste test - mistake! Lovingly offered a tasty piece of sushi. To this day he refuses to go for sushi with me.

I have learned the hard way too. :-)

Wasabi is better than Afrin for clearing out the sinuses. Keep this in mind the next time you have a cold.

There was a true story in the Reader's Digest a few years back about an Asian restaurant in a Hispanic area of town. Next to the wasabi, which has horseradish as the main ingredient, was a sign that said, "Muy Caliente! No es guacamole!"

A tiny bit of wasabi on each piece of sushi gives a tiny "spark" without setting you on fire, that's what i do with veggie sushi.

I love that hot stuff, but you have to take small bites! I guess you found that out.

Well, I didn't go nuts, but I had some pretty agonized expressions, if my Mom's reaction was any indication!

Yes... Reminds me of when my Husband and I went on a romantic dinner for Valentine's Day. Prime Rib. Husband loves sour cream, so I gave him mine, as it's not my thing. He then proceeded to nearly blow flames out his... ears, as it was horseradish sauce. The really, really strong kind. Romantic, not so much...

I think that is a rite of passage for that item...

I believe, with my tolerance for hot items, it would be about the only time I could handle it!

EEEP!!

A spark is okay, but I think I manage to set the whole place aflame. And yes, a warning that it's not guacamole would be a very helpful thing! I tend to like Chinese mustard, it's not QUITE so hot.

Yep, rather abruptly! ;)

Oh i've done that before. lol Yes, yes i have. I love Thai food, but i like it medium. Not very adventurous, i know. But i don't like for my eyes to water and to start gagging in a public place. And you're right. I would also associate green with cucumber or maybe mild mint. Tuna sounds good to me. You sound like you have a plan!

I am not adventurous at all. Let's just say, I have learned how to say "wimpy salsa" with a straight face at several local Mexican restaurants. And the tuna was quite good, had sesame seeds on it, which I thought was great! But I will wait for those signs, next time!

I have absolutely NO TASTE for anything even remotely spicey and because of that I shy away from any mystery substances. I hope your tongue healed ok!
