Gardening...

The crookneck are growing well.  I am learning how to do close ups with plants, and I thought this was a nice photo, sort of a peek-a-boo look. However, little frogs don't seem to like the paparazzi.  At least THIS paparazzi...  This was the best I could get of the little guy.  He was a very, very tiny thing, but I hope he eats a LOT of bugs. (Oh, if you are wondering, the yellow thing beside the frog is a Frisbee.  The roots and base of my cucumber were getting burned, so I put a cover over them.  Froggy seems to like it, too.)

Hot weather here, we are in the 80's and 90's, so I have to keep on the watering.  While the pots I am using make weeding a breeze, (if there are even any weeds to deal with, I think I have pulled... 2?), the pots limit how much water is available, and if I don't water heavily right now, I have very sad looking plants.

I had my first few crooknecks, so nice to have the first items from the garden.  Zukes coming on, even after all the abuse I've heaped on them.  Cucumbers are looking promising.  Pumpkin, too.  And I have lots of tomatoes, from Cherry size to Beefsteak.  Nothing red (or yellow, in one case) yet, but they are growing quickly.  I will have to ask my Mom if she wants some green ones, she makes green fried tomatoes sometimes.

I hope to watch a few videos on this site, it's all about gardening, some is very basic, some more advanced, some is, well, different, but I think it might have some good info.  At least I hope so.  The first video was rather lulling, the speakers are very quiet and soft spoken, but there are many others, so I shall see what goes on later.

Oh, and Rudee thinks he's a bee.  I finally had to put a chair over the pumpkin vine.  Rudee would come into the garden with me, and find a pumpkin flower, sniff once, then park his butt on it!  I would shoo him away, start watering again, and within a minute or two, he'd plop right down on the flower again!  Somehow, I don't think that's how the honeybees do it...

In other news, the chicks have almost fully feathered out. (Well, except one that looks like Martin Van Buren but I haven't been able to get a picture of.  The fluff hasn't come off of his face, and he has a very mutton chop-like styling...)  And, as you can see, Mon Ami is most definitely a Dad.  Twice, actually, but, those little chicks are very fast, and I only managed this photo, before they all ran off.

I have been home a bit more, but have taken the opportunity to catch up on housework, both indoors and out, so I haven't been at the computer as much as I would most times.  But, things are going well, if warm.  The folks who do haying have made same quickly around here, so we are looking at well cut fields at the moment.

This is the time I really like living here.

Ha! Because of you I'll be picturing Martin Van Buren as a chicken all day.

Your garden seems to be doing quite well. I didn't let the idea enter my mind this year. I tried different container gardening, one was in five gallon buckets, filled part way with soda cans and the rest with dirt. When I watered the bottom filled with a water 'reserve' so the roots and dirt would 'wick' the water up. I had mixed results. I have tried 2 liter soda bottles with a hole in the cap, filled with water, and stuck it in the dirt. Again, mixed results. You seem to have a handle on it. Love your chicks!

I love your chicken. Enjoy indoors and outdoors when it is not thundering.

Fried green tomatoes are very popular around here, and if i could grow anything, i wonder if they would leave any to get ripe!

It sounds like the best time of year for you, and i'm glad you are enjoying it.

Could be worse things... ;)

I find that putting straw on the bottom seems to work, haven't tried the soda cans... It sounds like it could be a good idea, though. The 2 liter soda bottles never worked for me, because animals would knock them down... Why, I don't know, but I would come out with the bottle dumped over... Pbbt.

Thank you! Yes, we have had storms off and on, so I have to stay aware of that...

I know that when we were growing tomatoes at Mom and Dad's, they would get a big amount of them, with Grandpa, and have a huge meal of green fried tomatoes. One crazy neighbor walked in, sniffed, thought it smelled good, and took Grandpa's fork right out of his hand and had a sample. One of the few times Grandpa was utterly speechless!
