beignets and green neon...

Ever tried to find something, and realize you've not one idea how to do so?

I had heard about this pastry, sounded nice.  Basically a doughnut like pastry with powdered sugar, and I was curious about it.  So, I went to the source of all things find-outable, Google, and then realized I hadn't the foggiest clue how to spell it.  Benyay? Ben yay? Benigt? I tried lots of different spellings, to no avail.  (At the time. I tried it again today, out of curiosity, and benyay turned up what I was looking for...)  I finally worked around it, I tried doughnut. Nope. Pastry.  OMG, how many zillions of entries? Pass... Then I started thinking, it had been an article about food in Louisiana, and so I put Louisiana food.  ACK!  Ok, NARROW the thing... I put "Louisiana doughnut" in.

BINGO!  The word, and food, I was looking for was beignets!  (However, when I was looking, I also found a few gumbo and po' boy recipes that weren't too shabby, either...)  So, I still don't know if I will get brave enough to try to make them, at least I know how to SPELL them...

This luck in figuring out things has NOT extended to finding something for my Dad.  He and Mom lived in Portland, Oregon, (ahem) years ago.  We were watching the news.  He mentioned he didn't know what the building was in the background of the broadcast, he didn't think it was there when they lived in Portland.  What building?  The one lined on the top with green neon.

Huh.  That shouldn't be too hard to find.  (This is where the gods laugh so hard they cry...)  I have Googled "buildings in Portland, Oregon",  "Green neon in Portland, Oregon" (some lovely pics, no building, however), "night in Portland, Oregon" (with the safe search firmly ON).  I have emailed the TV station, I have emailed a few Portland outlets, both commercial and non, that I thought might be in the area.  I have tried Google Maps.  Nothing.  People don't know what I am talking about, or haven't returned my emails, or conversely, I just can't FIND the darn building, except on the news.  I am just astounded.  It's like some sort of X-Files case, the building only visible on the news!

Sheesh...

The hunt continues.

I can imagine how your taste buds must be dictating you. I am yearning for the cheesy bread from Red Lobster. I just cannot bother with an entire trip, but just cheesy bread recipe would be nice.

Hmm... Not enough information for me LOL!
I find the internet is only as smart as the person surfing... Google will dance if you ask it the right question - if only you know what it thinks is the right question. LOL!

You've got me stumped, and I live in Portland, Oregon. Now I'm going to have to look for it. Maybe the KOIN Tower?

How nice of you to try to find that building, I hope you will succeed in the end. My hubby is from New Orleans and makes the best gumbo. Good luck if you try it, it involves a lot of chopping up seasonings to make it perfect.

I found a recipe for cheesy biscuits on Allrecipes.com, it looks like it would be pretty close. I like those quite well, too!

Boy, is that true. You also have to be able to cut it down. If you are looking for something, oh, Chinese Junks, say, you have to be specific. Just "junk" will come up with some real blind alleys. And in my case, I will also keep the 'safe search' on, or it will be another dose of brain bleach...

No, it's across from the Koin Tower, you see it in the newscasts... I think it's the Bank of America building?

I hope so, I know Dad was interested in finding out. I had a friend make gumbo with a local crawdad we have, bless him, he made two batches, one like fire, that Louisiana folk would probably enjoy, and then the... not so spicy stuff, that would allow me to not have a hole in my belly... But yes, it looks like a good thing to try when I get cabin fever!
