Saturday post. GARDEN!!

(We will hopefully resume normal posting Monday, but thought I better skip a day to make it line up a little more evenly for some folks that can't get to my blog every day...)

I am getting really, really REALLY eager to garden.  So much so that I asked for (and received) some starts that were in the office, from some succulents, so I could plant something!  They really seem to like the new digs, as it were, and are starting to grow some new shoots.

I go out as soon as it stopped raining, and looked at my garden area.  Sort of like a small child, can I plant yet, can I plant yet?  I know so very well I can't plant yet.  If you can pick up a ball of dirt, and it falls apart when you let go, it's dry enough to plant.

So far, I can't find my hand for the mud... Sigh.

I keep talking about all the different things I'd like to do, I am seriously wondering if Husband has been keeping his hearing aid out on purpose.  I guess I am getting just a little obsessive... Maybe.

However, one of the family members asked if I would grow some tomatoes for them.  I asked what kind.  There was a bit of a pause.  Well, do you grow more than one?

Oh, you poor sheltered thing...

I grow tomatoes that are several different colors, I grow them for eating fresh, for drying, for cooking...  I have grown as many as 12 different varieties at a time, just to see what some are like.  I normally grow about 6 or so, as there are some others like, and some I grow for myself.

(My Mother will chime in at this point the irony, that I grow bunches and gobs of tomatoes, and I really do NOT like them fresh...)

Then the rest of the veggies, of course.

Yep, I am so looking forward to growing something!  While it's not snowing here, I can relate to this meme all too well...

(where I found this...)

Here is Kansas City the weather has been intent on getting our hopes up that gardening season is close at hand. The the weather is always a nasty liar in March. I have most of my perennials up and some are blooming and guess what? It snowed yesterday. No accumulation but it's still below freezing today.

I envy you for having the space to grow vegetables. I love (LOVE) fresh tomatoes but I haven't the the space or enough sunlight to grow them. (28 trees in a normal sized yard) Thank goodness for farmer's markets.

Even I get that urge to dip my fingers in the soil to plant something and watch it grow. I resist mightily, the outcome is too disappointing around here and it gets too hot for me.

Does having a raised bed help any with the soaked dirt? Have you tried planting in a bale of straw? (or is it hay, I don't remember?)

I have a black thumb and can't grow much, but I do admire anyone who can grow things, especially to eat.

If i had to live with snow for any portion of the year, i'd probably feel the same, ready to get out and enjoy some sun and see some growing things! Not that any of those growing things want me to be responsible for them, of course.

Hope you do get to start gardening very soon!

Normally, it doesn't get back to snowing much after the end of February, but since I saw it snow as late as April 20th, I don't place bets on gardening right now... And yes, I am blessed with space, and time to garden. But a good farmer's market isn't out of the question either...

Hot is a big problem here, sometimes in the mid summer, it's all I can do to not have the poor things wilt. Or me, for that matter... But it NORMALLY isn't that long. And I will have to let you know later about the raised bed and muddy dirt. I have an inkling it will help, but haven't had a chance to see yet. I tried planting in straw, but didn't have good luck, I don't know if it was the straw, or the plants, but nothing thrived... It might have just been the screw loose behind the hoe, though...

I am not sure how much the plants want me to be responsible for them, I think they just stand back and watch the crazy woman!
