TARDIS! (Some assembly required)

Remember recently when I said I was looking for a cabinet to make a Tardis garden shed?  Well, I kept looking, and found one a few days ago.  (!!!)

I now need to work out what paint to use, turns out plastic needs a different paint than John Q. Housepaint.  So, I went to the paint store, and asked about the specific color Pantone 2955C, which is the color of the Tardis.

Um.

When you are talking about a TV show someone has never heard of, and they ask what it is... Describing a blue telephone booth that flies in space and time...

Makes people look at you funny.  Like you will start baying at the moon funny.  But, she rallied, and told me if I brought a sample of the color in, she could match it, and what was I painting.  So, I guess the Pantone number didn't help.  I do have access several ways to this color, and so the next time I go in, it shouldn't be so crazy person look inducing.

I hope.

Conversely, I was at the grocery store, and realized the checker I was going to had a Doctor Who style tattoo of one of the characters.  I have asked about things like this, and found people will wear things that they haven't a clue about, they just think it's pretty, or they like it.

So, I took a deep breath, and said,  "Ok, two words- (I point at the tattoo)"Don't Blink?"  Her eyes lit up, and she says, "Yes!  I am such a Nerd!  And then showed me the teeny Tardis necklace she was wearing as well.  I told her she should like my project, and she laughed when I explained my Garden Tardis.

I finished, and I heard the poor gent behind me say, "Why not blink?"

I guess sometimes it's worth a crazy person look...  :)

It is worth the look from bystanders when you meet a new friend! Yes, they can match the color, i once had them match the exact right purple on my bedroom slipper. It was the first time they'd ever matched a slipper, and my guess is they never forgot that.

Good luck with your project, i can't wait to see the results!

I am so happy you found your cabinet. Where did you track it down? After looking around on the Internet I didn't see anything that really fit the bill. Well short of buying a real Tardis for a couple of thousand dollars that is.

As for the Tardis blue color. This turns out to be a big discussion on line. One of the forums had several ideas on how to duplicate the Pantone color for Tardis Blue.

Seems you aren't alone in the Tardis building business.

Another approach is to go to a craft store and find a little bottle of acrylic paint (around 99 cents) or mix a couple of those together to get the color you want. Paint it onto a little board and have Sherwin Williams or some paint company that has a pretty accurate "paint match" scanner duplicate it for you.

I am looking forward to seeing a picture of your finished Tardis.

So happy you have found something suitable! I have kept looking, on and off, and wasn't sure This or that would really work. Will you actually be able to stand inside of it? I'm looking forward to seeing this new project!

I've never watched Doctor Who but I know many people who enjoy it.

Yes, I suppose that slippers are a bit of an unusual request to match, but if it's a color you like, that's what works! I am hoping to take photos as I do it, so I will have a bit of a record of the project...

Yeah, the finished Tardis, and finished Doctor Who scarves are spendy, but I guess that would make sense, since they are both more or less handmade...

Yes, the "blue" has varied through the decades a bit, I just want it close enough that it doesn't bug me. That leaves a bit of wiggle room, purist would have a problem, but when the forums for builders, crafters of yarn and floss, and one quilting group can't even come up with "THE" color, I think I am safe getting it in the general area.

I haven't tried the acrylic, but I found out one of my friends would lend me one of her Tardis props to take and have color matched, so that would work, too. I also want to look for the Pantone paint samples, I saw one, but of course, can't remember where, and haven't found it since I have been looking... Siiiiiiiggggh. I did manage to find the Pantone website, but I haven't been able to fathom if they have someway to order that ONE paint sample... So, I have a general idea, but will have to keep working on it.

Thank you for looking! The biggest problem was the doors on the cabinet. The doors generally were flat, which was okay, but would be a LOT of work, or rounded, like a 50's vintage fridge, and wouldn't work very well at all. This has some edges I have to deal with, but is a nice compromise, a little work, but not enough to send me into the fetal position. As for the standing, unlike the Tardis the Doctor has, it is NOT bigger on the inside, so yes, I could stand in it, but it will be snug, if I do so. It is really, honestly meant to be a garden tool shed, so is not large. That being said, a few photos of folks entering or leaving said Garden Tardis would not be amiss... And as things go along, I intend to put up pics, if the provider o' internet cooperates. (Meh.)

I think there is a small cadre of folks that really get into it here, but yes, there is a group that likes it, and I guess not surprisingly, those who have not a bit of knowledge of it. It seems like such a pop culture reference that it does take me aback when someone hasn't heard of it at all, but I know I have limitations about a lot of actors and singers 'n TV shows, so I guess it shouldn't be quite so shocking...

Oh, and welcome back!
