Eggs...

The hens are FINALLY starting to lay.  It has been the usual fits and starts, one egg, then a few, then none...

However.

I went to pick up eggs, and because some of the younger ones haven't quite caught on to the "lay in the nest box" thing, I check to see if any random eggs are about. So, while looking, I went to the feed bin.  Next to it, is the bin for the shavings I cover the floor with.  Behind that, up against the wall, is the empty plastic bags from the feed, and the shavings.

This is not your typical place to find an egg.

But, there it was, more or less balanced on some of the plastic, between the bins.  How it didn't get knocked down, or just plain fall off, I will never figure out.

But, I managed to pick it up, and it is now in the fridge for future use.

I am also keeping a curious eye on my birds...

My 'house' chicken laid her eggs on the sofa. I don't think chickens are born to lay their eggs in a man made box either. Somehow, they are trained, don't you think?

I remember my grandfathers chickens and it was interesting learning about where eggs came from.

As a little girl, I lived with my Grandparents and it was my job to gather the eggs. I would find them in odd places from time to time. The tractor shed or the barn...but the good layers would stay in the chicken coop and lay enough eggs for my Grandma to sell for her pin money.

Sometimes animal mamas find the weirdest places to hide eggs or babies!

I am not sure, they seem to want to lay in a "safe" place. I had one bird that would lay not in the boxes, but right under them. She felt less threatened by the other birds, I think. But, at least, your bird would be comfortable... Hopefully no one found an egg by sitting on it, however!

Yes, I kind of felt sorry for one family member, she'd asked how long chickens were pregnant for. I figured, she didn't know, it was a valid question. Several other family members derided her severely... Hmph.

Yep, my birds have laid eggs mostly in the nest boxes, but I have found them in briers, out on the floor of the hen house, one near the dog kennel(!), and one or two under buildings at our old house... Those weren't real fun when we found them... erg...
