Seedy little things...

I have a "closet" in the back of my pod, where I store garden tools, planter pots, that sort of thing.  So... I had noticed a plastic bucket, with a bag in it.  Hmm.

I took a look, and realized it was oodles of seed packets my Step Mom in Law had given me.  I don't know how long ago, but (cough) more than a year or two...

There are also many bulbs.  I will put them in a spot somewhere later, but I hold little hope for them.  Not a great lot for the seeds either, however, it still made for a bit of fun.

I went to the pod with a pair of scissors, and started cutting open all the packs of seeds.  There was Baby's Breath, and Zinnias, Daisies, Bachelor Buttons, California Poppies, and about a zillion other ones!

I dumped them into my seed spreader, and then went out to what we call "The Butte".  I have been working on getting flowers to grow there. Seeded it before, to have chicken buffet line. Put bulbs in, some dug up, and some just didn't make it.

So after Husband making a deer (AND CHICKEN) proof fence, I will try once again.  However, this batch of seed... Ahem.

I was looking at the dates on the packages... There were numerous ones... From 1979! That's 42 year old seed!!

I have no idea where, or how it was stored before I received it, but it was in a bucket, in the dark in an unheated room for as long as I have had them.  Not good.

The newest one was 2007, while marginally better, that is still 14 years!  It may just add nutrition to the soil, or wild bird food.  But, at least it now has a fighting chance, if it has ANY viability left, to do something.

I have bought flower seed for THIS year, and it will be spread out as well.  I figure if I keep at it and throw enough seed around, SOMETHING should happen.

Hope, it does spring eternal.

Unlike, probably, seed from 1979...

Heeheehee! Yep, some people just hold on to stuff, never quite realizing it's not going to be any good any more.

Here's to your meadow, i hope it blooms with at least some of what you plant.

Well, I guess it will feed the ground, if nothing else. And birds. I did NOT let the chickens have any, however, even if it was geriatric seed...

If it does, I will put up a photo! :)

You just never know about seeds. It will be interesting to see what comes up. I would do the same thing. Just spread’em, water them and watch for growth. Should be fun. And as you say - food for the birds at a minimum.

Yes, possibly. I figure nothing to lose, and it shouldn't hurt anything. I have more, new seed, so I might have SOMETHING this year... I hope.
