1. We have been having afternoon and night visits from a small herd of elk. They haven't done any damage! Little worried about a young elk that decided to walk the dotted line in the road, but one of the people driving by slowed down, and rolled up near the youngster. DIDN'T LIKE THAT!! Jumped over the next door fence and off into the woods... My garden is unharmed.
2. A band of turkeys are wandering around from the front to the back of our place. Poor Husband is raking leaves. They then UNrake them, throwing leaves all over the driveway. Sigh. When I do mulching, maybe it won't be such a problem. Thankful they aren't bigger, though.
3. There is one turkey, however, that hangs out mostly by himself. He is a real dip...rod, he sees his reflection in the bumper of my husband's truck, and decides it's a mortal enemy he must defeat. I have had to run him off several times. If he were a woodpecker, it might make sense, but he obviously doesn't have the brights of a half watt bulb. I would have thought he'd figure out it wasn't another turkey by now. I am thankful he hasn't seen his reflection in our pond!
4. We still have a few squirrels out and about, they are putting on the ounces. Maybe not Fat Bear week, but... Um. Substantial squirrel season? They are getting large! Glad to see they're not losing out to the deer and turkeys.
5. I haven't been able to "say hello", but a black kitty has been around our pole barn. I am thankful, and frankly, I hope he sticks around, maybe invites a friend or two. That would hopefully drive out the mice that have bedevilled Husband. He has had to clean mouse nests from several pieces of equipment. (Yuck...)
6. ALL the birds have finished molting. The roo was the last, and it managed to rain most of the time he was nearly bald. Not a pleasant sight, probably he didn't enjoy it, either. He has most of his body feathers back, but his butt still looks like a hens.
7. Husband and I were chatting, and we realized that Ding Kitty is about 10 years old. She still acts like a kitten most of the time. She likes to sleep more than she used to, but then, so do I! ;)
8. Our lilac bush has lost nearly all its leaves, and I am amazed at how many little birds use it as a stopping point. It isn't unusual to have the bush explode with birds when we walk by. But now we see them, rather than a rush of panic in the leaves. I am thankful they have a relatively safe place to rest.
9. The renters have the cows in the field across from us, and there is many young ones, running and playing. And the elders, chowing down while it's good weather.
10. The catty-cornered neighbor has the horses in their blankets. One threw me for a loop, the blanket has zebra stripes! But now I get several "fall" color changes from the horses, too!
Many thanks, and many thankfuls to you all!
