Didn't get it on TV...

Our local morning shows have a birthday section, where if you email them the person's name, age (optional), and of course what day, the birthday is announced.

Mom's was coming up, so I got on it EARLY, I sent in the information, nearly a week ahead! I was rather pleased with myself, I usually have to write a note or something, but got it zipped out in no time.

Her day came. The birthday list!  And...

No Mom.  She wasn't on there.

Let's just say, I was not saying ladylike things to the television...

So. I will put it on here, instead!

My Mom just had her birthday.

I put this on her cake.  It's a nickname I gave her, when I accidentally spilled root beer where she was sitting, while she was sitting there!

Happy Ones, Mama, only happy Ones!

Returning from hiatus...

Why was I on hiatus?  Because I didn't write.  I actually had time, off and on.  Just puttered about, doing things that weren't blogging.

I finished The Grapes of Wrath (The ones about the Oklahomans, not the World War 1 book...).  I thought it was a riveting book, and I am going to look up some more of Steinbeck at a later point.

Because it was a good book, but not exactly a laugh riot, I picked up Wyrd Sisters by Terry Pratchett.  I enjoy his work, and knew that he had written quite a few of the Disk World series, I decided to look up how many in total he'd written.  40, which is great!  More to read!

And also, he died.  Er... Oh.  Guess I missed that one. Crap.

Had my birthday, which had people giving me flower seeds. (I had requested this.  I thought it wouldn't be too much of a problem.  However, turns out, I didn't request early enough, and most places have quit selling seeds by the tail of July... Meh, still have a great variety...)

I finally was able to get someone out to shear my llamas.  These poor girls have been unshorn for nearly 2 years.  I was getting to the point, I was concerned someone might turn me in for neglect.  I had checked with shearers all across the state.  I had responses from "We don't DO anything less than ten animals", to "sure, I will be there Monday", and they never showed.  I called my local extension agency, who, very, very disappointingly, never got back to me.  So, I saw a neighbor that had a llama.  It was ONE llama, shorn.  So, I went and asked.

He told me he didn't do shearing, but he'd look up the number of the gent who did.  L, L. L, L, L, hmmm.  No, it's not under L.

Oh, wait, I didn't put it under L for llama, I put it... Yep, under S for Shearing!  (Organized like me... Hee hee.) So, he gave me the number, and I called.  And couldn't figure out if I had managed to leave a message or not.  I am still working the bugs out of my brain phone...  So I called the next day, and the gent was happy to come out.  You... will?  Great, when?

Is Saturday too soon?

I groaned inwardly, as I had another appointment, but decided that I was going to take a chance on this guy.  I told him where I lived, and he said, oh, blah, blah...  Turns out, it was 8 minutes from my house!

Saturday came, I was up at a little before 5.  Husband had put the chute out, I was out cleaning the area. (We use the chicken yard, and I raked up the little land mines, so it would be less of a mess, especially if the guy had to kneel.)  Fed, watered, haltered up the girls, and the phone rang about 6:15.

Do you mind if I run into to town for coffee?

No, we have it all ready for you, so when ever you're ready...

Oh, do you want me over there now?

I tried not to bray laughter, I assured him that a cup of coffee was fine, and we were just a bit ahead of the game, not to worry.

He arrived, a big gent, with a grey t-shirt and camo shorts.  Huh.  Well, he'll get his gear on when he starts, I guess...  Husband set up orange cones over the extension cord, as one of our neighbors has a bad habit of driving in and running it over, because he's busy watching what we are doing.

I get Dolly into the chute, and see he's oiling the clippers.  Huh.  I watch, as he comes up, lets Dolly take a sniff of him, pats her on the back, then starts in.  Starts in while wearing his t and shorts.  Most people I know have coveralls, and wear heavy boots.  I even wear a jean jacket to keep the biggest majority of fiber, spit, and dirt off of me.  Not this guy, and other than dust, he seemed to do fine.

Again, huh.  Husband was tired, and his back wasn't doing so great, but I'd forgotten to ask the gent about doing the llama's toes, which needed trimmed.  The gent looked up when Husband said to keep Dolly in so he could do that, and the gent pipes up, I have snips, would you like me to?

I kept looking to see where this guy was hiding his camo colored angel wings.  He was gentle to my animals, enjoyed what he was doing, and certainly took the burden off the two of us for the 'grunt' work involved with this part of livestock ownership!

I gave him some extra for the effort, he looked so surprised.  He then asked if I would like him to call next season, BEFORE the hot season, to shear and trim them.  I nearly dropped my teeth.  Yes, oh, thank you, yes!  So now we have two very defluffed llamas (I told him to basically cut off all the hair, the llama equivalent of a buzz cut).  He did, and the darker one, Dolly, actually looks like a deer with a long neck at the moment. A mutant deer?  But they are doing much better, and it's supposed to get hot by week's end, again, so they will not be so overwhelmed with fur...

Husband did a job, and was paid with some of the company's product, which means that I now have 2 really beautiful, as well as excellent quality kitchen knives.  We had made a trip just shy of 2 hours away for him to do this job, and I went, just for the day out.

I knew it was taking a bit, when Husband came out, he had me come in to choose said knives.  I picked a bread knife, and Husband chose a chef's knife.  Meanwhile, he and the maintenance man were having an intense discussion about machines, tools, and such.  I was half listening, while watching two of the employees work on the knives.  Next thing I know, the guy is offering Husband a job...

I really think that if they ever get this cloning thing figured out, I am going to have to hide my husband, or there will be several dozen of him about.  At least if all the people who want help from him are any indication! (And no, he didn't take the job.  2 hour commutes are NOT his cup of milk. He doesn't care for tea...)

I picked a lot of black berries, and made jam.  I did this over two days, so I picked, crushed, then put the juice in the fridge.  Normally, I do all this one day, and so I never thought about it, just do.  Well, I had this 'stuff' on the top, and I skimmed it before I made jelly.  It was mostly fruit solids and such, but when I made the jelly this time, it was so much prettier than what I've made in the past.  I might just have to do that again!  So I have around 8 pints of jelly.  Yay!  Now I will have to bake up some bread...

(The chickens enjoy the seeds and leavings from the berry picking, but let's just say that the landmines around of late have a definite violet tinge...)

I also have been drawing up the t-shirt for the Ren Faire.  I gave them several ideas, they narrowed it to two.  I worked on both, just knowing they would love the one.

Nope, the other.

Oh.

So, I worked on the other.  They then wanted a change to that one, too.  Hmm.

So, I did the changes, (fortunately, some of it I had on computer, so I didn't need to start from square one, thankfully).  Finally, I was able to send a completed logo she liked, so I will get it out tomorrow, if all goes well, and we will have a new t-shirt for faire.  I laugh a little about this, I draw well enough, but I know there are some that are astounding in the arts.

But when I ask around, would any others like to draw the shirts, we even had a competition, I was the only one that turned in anything.  So, I have been the 'shirt artist', for something like 5 or so years.  Hey, I get a free shirt out of the deal, so it works out.

Oh, and I have been knitting a pillow for a friend, I don't think she reads this blog, so I can get away with telling.  She is a big Doctor Who fan, so the pillow is dark grey with speckles, like space, and the TARDIS will be centered on the front.  She, and her husband, have helped me quite a lot, and I wanted to give her something nice.  She is going through a rough patch at the moment, and I thought something nice and cushy would be good...

And a pillow will last a lot longer than a jar of jelly.

Hi, Mom!

Happy Birthday to you!

Today is my Mom's birthday.  She was actually born on Labor Day that year (for real), with which we tease her sometimes...

A woman who seems to have knowledge of things as diverse as how to make several different sewing patterns come together to make ONE blouse.  How to make a musty book not stink.  Several recipes to use up zucchini, including one bread recipe that I wait impatiently for the 'zukes to come up to make. (Ironically, I will have to PURCHASE zukes this year, the slugs ate them all... snif...)  She taught me to cook, to keep a checkbook, tried to teach me to sew (hey, I sew on a mean button...),  has a high tolerance for fun, a low tolerance for... male cattle excrement, and is a generally all around cool person.

Happy birthday, Mama...  Your kid loves you.

(Haven't been writing my blog lately, sorry.  We fixed the modem problem, now the company is having problems with PROVIDING the internet at any speed, we are presently SLOWER than what we used to have as dial up, making up, or down loading anything almost impossible... So, it is supposed to be looked at soon.  Ahem.  Right.  Keep watching for them flying pigs... )

The internets work now! Yay! (Now with Pictures!)

Well, in the great scheme of things, I could have written a blog sooner.  But partly, I wanted to make sure the silly modem would actually keep me online when I was working...  It does!  I also have been on the go again, so when I did sit down to do a blog, I stared at the computer, until it bumped me in the nose, as my head slumped forward in slumber... Yeesh.  You'd think that I could get some energy, get wound up, SOMETHING... But at any rate, computer is working, so now I can.

This was a collection of items I sent to a charity group called One Nation Walking Together, through my Ravelry group.  Some I already had knit, some I had been knitting on, so it's an oddball collection of stuff.  But I am hoping it helps people stay warm this winter...

From the Ravelry website, as I forgot to get pics...

And we have established, after a little math, I am 2 pints from my 9th gallon.  It was so funny when I donated, they always play music, and it happened to be Tom Petty's "Free Fallin'", which relaxes me.  The guy took my blood pressure, and said, "Your blood pressure is amazing, most people would be asleep at this point."  Works for me!  Music is good for the soul, turns out it must not be too bad for the body, either!

Thanks to Husband for pic, found out I take crappy
'selfies' of my arm...

This is over looking Clear Lake, where Husband took me for my birthday.  It was absolutely neat out there, a few ducks diving for breakfast, the occasional wild cyclist hitting the trail near the lake, and a few confused tourists that were trying to figure out how to light the furnaces in the nearby cabins.  (It gets colder out here than you might expect, even in summer!)

This is Fish Lake.  Yes, it is a lake, and yes, there are fish in it.  In the winter.  The lake drains out in spring, and the fish take off for wetter accommodations, leaving this a huge pasture.  Until recently, it was an area to stake out Forest Service horses and mules, but I am not entirely sure they do that now...

I believe last blog had me saying that Great Grandpa had built some buildings pre-1910.

(Sigh.)

Wrong on both counts.  He DID build a building... He is my GREAT-Great Grandpa, and the time was 1921.  But anywho, this is the sign that mentions him.  (Under Dispatcher's Cabin.)  So that was cool.
I will put up a few more of the signs in a later blog.

This is the dispatcher's cabin, I think.  It was closed, so we weren't able to see said signature, but we did look in the windows, (which were the cool wavy glass ones), and they have it set up as close to original as possible.  The wavy windows didn't, however, let me take any good pictures of the inside...

And we have found one of a vanishing breed.  Yes, Virginia, we can have Superman change clothes here.  (And yes, I mixed my metaphors. Hush.)  I think that is the first free standing phone booth I have seen in quite a while.  I really sort of miss them... (Groans the dinosaur...)

Sahalie Falls, was a stop we made, it was something Husband had heard of, but hadn't been to.  If I'd heard of it, I didn't remember it.  So after a short walk down several steps, this was the view.  It was loud enough that we really had to speak up to hear.  There was a couple other falls, as I remember, but we decided that it was a bit too long of a walk there and back, so this was it...

Unrelated to the aforementioned trip, we went Jeepin' yesterday, and found this.  We hadn't realized there was a dam that had been so close to where we lived.  Past tense, obviously...  Just letting it sort of decay back to what it was, I guess...

Other than our internet is running sllllllllllloooooooooowwwly, it is holding together.  More blogs that way!

Can he handle the excitement?

So.  I told Husband that I had a gift planned for him.

"Uh huh?"  (Well, he was driving...)

I told him that I was going to get him a dog.  First he looked confused, then after I explained the word DOG, as he didn't hear it, (L*rd knows what he actually heard...), I said I would get him one in the spring, he could pick out "his" dog, as the last one, Rudee, was my choice.

His response?

"Oh. Okay." Small smile. Nod.

Uh. I didn't expect handsprings, but geez.  He has never been real demonstrative, but sometimes I really think the man needs a bit more caffeine.

And we played with my half finished sock last night, it DOES glow, so when I finish it, I will put a lighted and dark photo on of the effect.  (They should give my feet that healthy green glow! Heh!)

So, Husband, if you are reading, I love you, even if you don't get real excited about 'stuff', and Happy Birthday!

Ahem...

Happy Birthday
to my
Mom!

I forgot to get your birthday on TV, so I put it on my blog, instead...
Hope you had a good one!

Love,
Your Kid.

(Please feel free to wish my Mom happy returns of the day, as she reads my blog.)

Casanova's haircut and pedicure, transgender chickens, and guessing games.

Tomorrow is the big day.  I had to re-arrange the schedule a bit, since Husband has been swamped with work, but he and I will be doing toenail trims on all the llamas, and shearing Lorenzo.  The new girls don't have long enough hair for it to be worth shearing, and I am not shearing Llama, as she is getting quite old, and seems to need her hair for keeping HER warm.  And I also don't want to stress her any more than I have to.

Oh, why did I mention Casanova?

Wellll, we were in the garage, and Husband heard this noise.  I suspected what it was, but we walked out and looked out in the pasture.  Annie and Lorenzo were enjoying each other's company, in the biblical sense.  (Poor Lorenzo, Toni was having a fit, and spitting at him vehemently, so he was being heavily chastised for enjoying himself.  He just turned away from Toni and went back to enjoying himself.  Annie seemed to have no opinion on the matter.)  This went on randomly for a day or so, then Annie decided she'd had enough, and ran him off.

The next day, we heard Lorenzo again.  Looking out the window, we realized, he was enjoying himself with Dolly!  (And Toni still didn't approve.  Toni seems to be a bit of a prude...)  So, we have been having random llama p0rn the last few days.  I wonder if it's giving the roosters ideas...

Speaking of roosters, we also have been having 3 birds crowing in the morning.  We have 2 roosters.  One little black hen has decided she is going to crow, and no one is going to stop her. (If I can get my camera to do the record thing, I will try and put it on the blog later.)  She started a few weeks ago.  Now, if there is no rooster around, one hen will sometimes crow, and sort of take over as a lead bird.  I reiterate, I have TWO roosters.  And they didn't like her deciding to crow.  They pounced on her, hit her with wings and feet, plucked feathers, what ever those little shelled pea sized brains could come up with to get her to stop.

She just got mad, fought back, and crowed as she ran away.

The roosters have now come to the conclusion that she is not going to stop crowing.  They have now switched to the method of dealing with her that my family refers to as "high ignore".  If they don't pay attention to her, she isn't a problem.  And she just walks around, clucking happily, catching the occasional bug, laying the occasional egg.

And crowing.

(You go girl!)  :)

My birthday is Sunday.  I don't know what to wish for with the old birthday cake, but I will think of something, I am sure.  I have had a few people ask me how old I am.  I will say to all of you that are curious, I was born in '67.  You do the math.

This isn't to be rude, quite frankly, more often than not, I have to do the math myself, because I can't remember.  This is why, unlike a friend or two of mine, the big 4-0 was a big woo-pee.  When I wake up some days feeling like I'm 17, and others like I am 89, the actual number doesn't mean all that much.

So, everyone gets a slice of virtual birthday cake from me, and may you all have a wonderful day.  I will probably be recovering from dealing with 20 llama toes.  And one horny llama haircut.  (Photos only if I can manage it...)

And listening to 3 crowing birds...

(Oh, and since a few people asked, the stuff I take now is Aleve.  I have found it works great for me, however YMMV...)

Short. Just... Short.

Husband's birthday today, check.

Christmas shopping. Check.

Presents wrapped.  Ahem.  (I know where the wrapping paper is, does that count?)

All presents finished.  AHEM.  (But knitting frantically, and have bought ink, will be done with any luck tomorrow... GOOD luck, I mean...)

Weigh in, 2.6 pound loss.  HOT DAYAM!!! WOO HOO!!! , uh, check...

Saw a bald eagle flying overhead today, saw baby lambs, children playing hopscotch while chanting Sant- Ah- Claus, while hopping, and made some folks happy today, including one bloke that looked like a reject from the Hell's Angels, he thought my hat was terrific.  I thanked him.

Somehow, responding that I thought his bull nose ring was cool... Wasn't said.

I couldn't figure out how to make it sound right...

But, ya know, happy is happy!

Hope your day is!

(Yesterday, I mentioned, as a JOKE, chocolate, labelled health food?  I was in a local vitamin store, and they had a bag of dark chocolate, and it was labeled for Heart Health.  NOT JOKING!  Wish I'd had my camera.  So, dig in, folks, Santa said so!!!)  ;)

Sunday, July 25, 2010

Sunday Supplement, Late Edition.

Ok, just back from a dinner, and when we returned, I had this.  (ONE slice, small, and the rest is in the freezer.  Now if I can just stay out of the freezer.  Or walk a whoooole bunch more...)

And the roses were given me on my birthday. They were from a rose bush from my Grandpa to my Mom.

(I had a rosebush from him, too, but a deer ATE IT. &%$#!!!!!)

Anyway, I received the Orchid today. Now comes the Darwin part. So, anyone wanna take bets on how long it takes me to figure out how to care for it?

Hope all of you are doing well, I will be getting the finish of my Petty-ness soon.

Then I can go on to Virginia Loans, jumping cats, and decisions on socks, afghans, and possibly quilt blocks...

Thrill a minute, huh?

:)

Uh... Best laid plans and all that...

I am celebrating my birthday today.  I was going to change my blog, just for fun.

I wanted snow on my birthday, and so I put the snow widget on.

I love red, and so I changed that.

Why does it look like something Santa would have done with a really, REALLY bad hangover?

Anyway, it will change, when I can figure out what I did.

(And the last of the concert blogs, too.)

Now back to your regularly scheduled day!

ENJOY!

(I know I will)

Today's My Birfday!!!

(I have a little friend that says that sentence exactly that way. I think it's adorable...)

So, what did I do on my birTHday? Um....

I worked on getting some llama beans into my garden. The llamas don't seem to mind. They just wanted to see what was in the bucket, and gave me the oddest look when they figured out it wasn't food!

I dead headed some flowers, put them on a tray to dry for seed, knitted some more on my Harmonic Rainbow socks, (and yes, I did clean up after my bout with the beans...), and then went to dinner with family. Some of the family were people I'd not seen in some time, and I didn't realize Mom and Dad weren't familiar with them, so I felt a tad dorky when my Step Mom in Law did the introductions. That minor awkwardness aside, it went pretty well. Mom was getting a bit achy by the end, but it sort of worked out, because we could all gracefully exit.

I had a nice birthday, it actually started yesterday, Husband took me to the coast, (guess what dork forgot her camera??!?), and we had lunch. He also bought me another llama, and a camel! And a lion!! Uh, they were little plastic replicas, but it's the thought that counts, right? I received some towels from Step Mom in Law, and some funds from Mom and Dad, because Mom was sort of incapacitated, and couldn't get out to get anything for me.

I have a really neat family, and I am blessed. Even my llamas want to help!
Well, so do my cats, one on each foot as I weed, and Rudee sticks his head through the deer fence to wash my ear, if I am close enough.

I am happy!

And thank you to all who sent me birthday wishes, e or otherwise!

Never said this was a daily...

My Mom had a birthday, and I think I did an OK job with the cake. I wish I had more practice with the normal roses you put on a cake, but that will have to be a 'winter project'.

Had another year with Shrewsbury. Went OK, wish I hadn't had to take a nap midday, I was beat. Dad was going strong late into the night. I think I need more caffeine... Mom's leg was bothering her and she didn't attend.

Next "door" neighbor across the street tried to burn his field. Half burned, the other half fizzled. So he plowed it under. Made for an interesting show, though.

Have been getting a great haul from my garden. Lovely crookneck, the occasional zuke, a pumpkin is growing, late corn coming on, sunflower is HUGE, beans are finished... Then there is my "cheddar" cauliflower. Icky. It is big, bad and buggy. I guess I will have to do something different with it next year. BUT, they did grow!!!

So, hopefully, I will be able to post a bit more, maybe... But, I have ONE more biggie type event. The Oregon Flock and Fiber Festival. (OFFF). If I survive heavy inhalation of wool fumes, I will have pictures... Then I think I am free for a bit. Except for the T'ai Chi with Mom. Tutoring Dad on the Internet. Oh, and I am doing some Charity knitting. And the socks...

*Sigh* Never Mind...
