Saturday post. GARDEN!!

(We will hopefully resume normal posting Monday, but thought I better skip a day to make it line up a little more evenly for some folks that can't get to my blog every day...)

I am getting really, really REALLY eager to garden.  So much so that I asked for (and received) some starts that were in the office, from some succulents, so I could plant something!  They really seem to like the new digs, as it were, and are starting to grow some new shoots.

I go out as soon as it stopped raining, and looked at my garden area.  Sort of like a small child, can I plant yet, can I plant yet?  I know so very well I can't plant yet.  If you can pick up a ball of dirt, and it falls apart when you let go, it's dry enough to plant.

So far, I can't find my hand for the mud... Sigh.

I keep talking about all the different things I'd like to do, I am seriously wondering if Husband has been keeping his hearing aid out on purpose.  I guess I am getting just a little obsessive... Maybe.

However, one of the family members asked if I would grow some tomatoes for them.  I asked what kind.  There was a bit of a pause.  Well, do you grow more than one?

Oh, you poor sheltered thing...

I grow tomatoes that are several different colors, I grow them for eating fresh, for drying, for cooking...  I have grown as many as 12 different varieties at a time, just to see what some are like.  I normally grow about 6 or so, as there are some others like, and some I grow for myself.

(My Mother will chime in at this point the irony, that I grow bunches and gobs of tomatoes, and I really do NOT like them fresh...)

Then the rest of the veggies, of course.

Yep, I am so looking forward to growing something!  While it's not snowing here, I can relate to this meme all too well...

Seeds.

I look at seed catalogs in February, and I get all itchy to start planting.  Now that it is actually warm(er), I finally have some seeds sprouting... I had some trouble starting them, the heating unit wouldn't work, we think it is because the outlet is bad... Maybe???

Then I was told this season, oh, you shouldn't water your plants heavily, just mist them a bit in the morning.  Yeah...
And then it would dry out in 10 minutes, leaving me with dry soil and a seed, which doesn't do much.
I decided to go back to my tried and true...

And now I have some seeds starts.  I guess I should just do what I know, it works.  I don't put down anyone else's methods, but I know what works for me.

When I was little, Grandpa bought me a "jumble" pack of seeds.  I think they still sell them, you get all sorts of seeds, in one packet, and when you plant them, you end up with a mini garden.  I knew what some of the seeds were, (sunflower seeds aren't exactly hard to recognize), but the tiny ones, wow, what are these little ones?  Turned out to be a carrot seed.  I think I learned my love of gardening from him...

And I am so glad that he taught me how to how weed!  Why?  I found out I have some Japanese Knot Weed in one of my small gardens, I have been digging and weeding that nasty thing out... I will win! Hmphf...

But I guess I also get philosophical about seeds.  You try your best and it doesn't work.  So you keep trying, and working, and finally you find what works, for you.  You put a lot of things together, and most of the time, it comes up with something amazing!  Sometimes, you find something you don't know what is, but you try it, and see that it's something great.  Then again, you might find something you don't like, but by then you know how to get rid of it, even if it takes a while.
