Surprised, and pleased!!

(Note:  I had said on the Thanksgiving post that Grandma had died.  Mom said it was when my Grandpa died. Sorry about that...  The pizza was still good, though...)

Came into work today, and there was a black bag on the volunteer's table.  Not unusual. We leave things for one another, one of the gals and I trade plants, bulbs, and occasionally yarn.  Some of the others have different items they might send one to another, books, something that was in an oily box... ?  Anyway, it's not that strange.  Still give it a once over, to make sure it's not anything stinky, (I had to move a lovely flower arrangement one time, because after about 10 minutes I had a headache that wouldn't quit...), and if there's anything that shouldn't be there for whatever reason...

So, I look, and since I have to open up the place, I just glance to see what the note on it is.  My name?  Huh!  Okay, check in a minute... Get the place open for the day, and back...  So, what is this little bag?

I look in, and one of the Deputies had left me a bag 'o things.  The bag itself is a backpack type thing, you can carry wet items in it, if need be, but it's a quick go bag, basically.  Inside was a cup that I could quite easily have a serving of soup, or just about my morning ration of tea.  And some pens, and what not.  I think it's giveaways from a meeting he went to, from some of the business cards and papers I saw inside.  There is also a folder that is one of those kind you can use as a writing surface.  That I can use!  Well, some of the other stuff, too, but especially that!

I thought that was pretty cool.  I try and let the guys know I appreciate them, it's nice to know that it's returned.

And I put a thank you note on his desk, too!  :)

You know you are a yarnaholic when...

The In-Laws are here for a visit.  They were sitting, and I had just come back from helping with a volunteer project.

We who do the stuff, are often volunteers for various groups.  That day was no exception.  I arrived, and one of the gals who helps out at the hospital, as well,  buttonholed me to show me some yarn.  Turns out, the hospital can't use wool yarn, and so she thought of me.  Read: having the yarn in a bag, handing it to me, THEN asking if I wanted it, and 'sweetening' the deal, by telling me the yarn was real Irish wool.  (This doesn't impress me as much as it should.  I bought some VERY expensive Irish wool one time, the gal had the gift of Blarney.  She told me it was the very best wool, and it would wash up wonderfully.  I think it was spun without being cleaned, it was incredibly scratchy, and didn't do much when washed but make the washer a mess.  I think it was the wool equivalent of Irish soccer hooligans... Her store didn't last long, either.)  But this was nice, and came with some lovely short wood needles, so I figure, fine!

So, I took it, and when I came home, I put the wool in the freezer.  This isn't nearly as crazy as it sounds.  Leaving it in the freezer kills any moth larvae, which hatch and make a giant mess of your wool.  I found out this the hard way.  So, after plopping it in, I go and sit, making chit chat with family.

Without thinking of the repercussions, during a lull, I told Husband, "I put some yarn in the freezer."
He responded, "Good thing I just cleaned it out for you, huh?"

Very rarely are my In-Laws at a loss for words.  They just looked at the two of us, mouths open, then shut, and with a look and shrug, they changed the subject.

YES!  My crazy yarn lady cred is intact!!!

On the go, now go slow(er).

I have been on the go of late.  I actually did go one time on my own, for a movie I wanted to see, but the rest, either stuff to keep the place going, (read: groceries and animal feed), or ‘stuff’ for the volunteer work.  I am getting to the point that the volunteer work is going to be scaled back. Pruned, even… I have already turned in notice to one group.  I turned in notice earlier, IN WRITING, to another group, but they still have me as lead.  They will learn…

But due to varying personal reasons, and just the fact, hey, I want some “ME” time…  I am going to be cutting back.  And you know, I am (mostly) not feeling guilty about it.  I am still volunteering for the Sheriff's Office, and I will still do a few other things from time to time, but I am really needing to back off, and maybe work on some things closer to home...

I will still be knitting for others, but I have two projects I wanted to knit for me.  I have knit one, a vest.  I have yet to sew it together and finish it (it has some fluffy edges that needs be done after being put together), and a nightcap from the 1840’s.  The juxtaposition is rather astounding, one is quasi-hippie, the other is somewhat highbrow London.  I am not eccentric eclectic for nothing!

Deciding to sit down and read casually again was a good thing on my part.  I read through… Game of Thrones, Clash of Kings, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Dance of the Bones (J.A Jance), and decided to try Don Quixote.  I saved Swarm of Swords for faire reading.  I think it will fit in rather well, actually.  Even if Mister Martin doesn’t have a clue about the melting temperature of gold… Sorry, my willing suspension of disbelief sort of fell by the wayside for that chapter.  Hopefully I haven’t dropped any spoilers.  My reading speed seems to have been fine, but I am most glad I have my "superpower" glasses (bifocals) now, I don't have to put the book against my nose to read print!

This week will be getting costumes and such readied for faire.  It will be a bit bittersweet, this will be the first year I am not going to be manning much of anything.  I will help a friend with her booth, she is going through some medical issues, and she is scaling back, too.  I will help with one or two items, but faire is more or less free for me this year.  That said, one of my friends there passed away this morning.  It was expected, and we are going to have a memorial for her there.  Several of my friends that started faire are gone, and while I still see the fingerprints of them, I miss the people…

My Auntie is coming for a visit next week, not sure what that will bring.  She lives in Arizona, so I hope she remembers to bring her down parka and long underwear!  (I do think perhaps she won’t be quite that bad, but I do know the temps are supposed to cool here, and she had been dealing with 100+ for a bit.  Sweaters will indeed be a good thing, though.)

I have been working on keeping the garden picked.  However, keeping up with zucchini is a challenge.  If you miss one, you end up with a baseball bat. Husband and I joke, there is a recipe for Zucchini Boats.  When they get that big, you have Zucchini Battleships…  The chickens don’t seem to mind, so it works out.  And it’s been a pretty prolific year for my tomatoes, I hope to put some up, but man, oh man, right now, I need to start figuring out who would like some, because I could make tomato soup for a LARGE group at the moment.  Blackberries gave me several pints of jelly, I could probably make more, but I probably have enough jars to last at least a couple seasons.

I also have apples.  I had to laugh, I had spent most of the morning picking tomatoes and zukes, Husband commented, wasn’t I going to pick apples?  I told him no, I was getting a bit tired.  He said, uh, I could pick some, I don’t want the pie crusts you have to go to waste…

So, there is a pie cooling on the stove right now.  I will have to see about getting something done with the tomatoes, but you know, there are priorities.  If Husband was willing to go pick a mess of apples, well, I was willing to make him a pie!

Getting back to "normal"? And the knitting continues.

I don't know why, but I start out the month, and I know if it will be busy or not.  Rarely am I surprised.

This month is so-so.  Last month was crazy.  Hopefully I won't jinx it, but next month looks fairly open.

BUT...

I have to get some check-ups taken care of, so we shall see what happens.  And, the Ren group wants some help with cleaning up and preparing the site.  I will see if I can do that, but I usually go for one long stint, then remember that I am, uh, not invincible.

Sigh...

I am finding that I am considering the busy times more 'normal'.  Why, I am not sure.  I actually LIKE being home, but strangely, it feels like I should be doing something when I am home.  Go figure.

I am sort of apprehensive, I have a presentation coming up at the end of this month, and have been doing a lot of research.  I know my stuff, and I am fine with the people I will be talking to, but I am not entirely looking forward to the talk.  I suppose, part of it is that I am not an expert on the subject.  I will be with people who are not only experts, but work on and with the subject (that being scam prevention and preventing identity theft).  To this end, I will be having one of the said experts checking my work, so to speak, so I am not giving anyone a 'bum steer', and I will be then trying to focus, so I don't blather on, or conversely, go blank.

Also, I hope my rosacea doesn't act up.  I would really like to go up and speak without looking like I have dipped my face in red paint...  Meh.  (And also has given some to think I am a woman of a certain age. Which, while I am, it's still annoying.  Sheesh...)

I have been keeping my sanity centered by some incredibly zen-y, mindless knitting.  I have knit a lot of squares.  Basic, garter stitch squares.  I will, when I finish, have 100.  I have been knitting these for a while, I believe I am up to sixty.

The presently cat-free desk, with afghan mock-up and Petty poster...

(For anyone interested, the pattern, such as it is, is cast on 38 stitches.  Knit 72 rows. Bind off. Repeat 100 times.)

I will border them with black, and the end product?  Maybe a bedspread, as large as it will be.  Or a really, really big cocoon blanket. I actually have knit more than 60 squares at this point, some have been accidental doubles of the same color, so they are put aside, I might donate them to charity. (A group uses these kind of squares to sew up for elders).  I also have a few that didn't have enough yarn to make a square, those might be in my crazy quilt.  Or just un-knit, and put aside for some other project, because we all know I have so little yarn! (COUGH, COUGH!)

Coming soon, hopefully: chicks.

G is for...

Good Morning.

Tuesday Mornings, specifically.  I have volunteer work that day, and so I have to "get at it" early.

I wake, and usually hear Husband already starting his day, showering.  I get up, let the cat out of the carrier, (we have her sleep there, for safety and health reasons.  Her safety, our health...), and we walk to her food dish.  I put down her kibble, clean the litter pan, and, after washing up, I prepare Rudee dog's food, and head out to the early morning.  In fact, right now, it's not so much early morning as just DARK.  I have to take a flashlight out, so I don't stumble.  Run the dog out for his morning potty break as I feed Buzz cat.  I hear the wild turkeys chuckle and gobble as they come out of the trees.

The neighbor's dog usually sees me, and starts barking.  Since he has the average intelligence of  burned out 1/2 watt light bulb, I ignore him.  I keep wondering how the neighbors can stand it, but they don't seem to get upset with him letting fly at 5:30am...

I get the food out, and Buzz lives up to her namesake, purring and crunching away.  I then get the chickens some food, and oyster shell.  They grumble and cluck, wanting out as soon as they wake up, this is the one day of the week they get out early.  They fly out the door, each claiming the 'best' spot, eating like I've starved them to death.  Drama Queens. (And King...)

If they decide to show, I will give a little bit of feed to the llamas.  They have learned not to dawdle, they love the food, but if they don't finish it quickly, the chickens are much willing to clean it up, even if they have to peck noses to do it.  The llamas, in turn, spray the chickens with spit, so I usually make a hasty exit before I have to have a shower...

And back into the house, quick breakfast for me, get my uniform on, make lunch, grab my various bags o' tricks, and purse, get out the rig, and get gone.

Come to think of it, I think it's one of the only days of the week that I am actually organized!

*****

G could also be for good deeds, which I saw yesterday.  I was getting groceries, and then lined up to pay and leave.  2 people ahead of me.

Great, quick line...

The first was an older man, another a woman a bit younger than me.  I watched as the man pulled out a card, typed in a number, and the clerk shook her head.

"Pin didn't work, could you try again?"
Type, type, type.
Nope.
He pulls out another card.
Same result.
I start to fidget. I start to hurt if I stand very long, and this was seeming to take a bit.
He pulls out a third card.
Greaaaaaat.
Type, type, type, type.
"Sorry, sir, still not working..."

About this time, the lady peeks at what he's getting, and I see a smile hit the corners of her mouth.  She slips into her purse, pulls out a ten, and taps the man on the shoulder.

"Merry Christmas early!  I will pay for his groceries..."

The man looks surprised, and then thanks her, asking if he needs to pay her back.
"Yes, you owe me one thing.  Go home and ask your wife what your pin number is!"

Sorry, Jerry Garcia...

What a long, strange day it has been.

Well, you know how I blog about volunteering for the Sheriff's Office?  Well, BOTH my bosses were laid off.  It was really abrupt, and things are crazy at the moment.  We had a meeting/pot luck to see what was going to happen.  Basically, they will be there until the end of the month, and then THEIR boss will be our boss, if we are kept on.  The Sheriff would like to keep us on, so he can keep the substations open, but the one that is going to be the 'new' boss has about 3 or four groups he is working on now, he has other things that have been added, with the cuts, and gee, he really should do the 'catching the bad guy' stuff, I suppose... (Yes, heavy snark content...)

I have so enjoyed this 'job', and it has been as near to a family atmosphere as I have ever seen with a group, and this is just tearing the absolute guts out of nearly everyone.  I have started writing letters to whomever I can think of on how this can be changed.  I don't know if it will help, but at least it will make me feel like I am doing something besides gnashing my teeth.

Okay, enough with the unhappy s***.  In other news, I know spring is coming!  Because:

First egg of the season! Yay!  I don't have to buy eggs now.  (I buy them begrudgingly, as I don't use lights in the chicken house, so for a few months in winter I get zippo in the egg department...)

**********************************************************

I was going to put this last section up in the morning.  Well, it is morning. Barely.  To explain.  I am signed up with a county wide notification system.  It notifies big stuff (chemical leaks, major weather events) and then it can notify in specific areas, about localized events.  This is what occurred this evening about 6ish.  I received a phone call that a woman had been lost about a half mile or so away from me, as the cliche'd crow flies.  I filed it away under "Hmm", and went on.

We went to bed a bit later, and realized we heard helicopters.  They were doing a grid search, I suspect, as I heard LOUDquietLOUDquietSORTAloudquietquietquietquiet gone.  I went to sleep.

I woke to lights in the bedroom!

I panicked, jumped out of bed, and as always, tangled in the **** bedsheets, waking Husband.  I headed to the window.  Husband, who seems to always be a bit more clear headed right after waking up, unlike me, said, it's probably just the Search and Rescue (SAR) kids.

Oh...  Right.

I went to the door, while Husband went and shushed Rudee, and listened.  3 or 4 "kids" were walking up the road, shining flashlights in the ditches, on the road, across the pasture, anywhere a person might be, while talking about what direction they were going next.

Yep, SAR.  I think my heart rate slowed to less than 100 at that point.  I went back to bed.

And didn't sleep.

Between thinking about the bosses being canned, worrying about the woman, and if she was okay in the latest weather we've had, (somewhat chilly, and heavy rain, with cooler weather to come), wondering how the deputies were doing out there, and the fear spike, I didn't go back to sleep.  I tried several things, and calmed down, but still couldn't sleep.  So, I got up, turned on my computer, (light level as low as I could get it on same) and read comics, wrote an email or two, and decided I would add to this blog.

Sooooo, I will let you know how all this turns out, but even with cuts, it looks like the Sheriff is still going to be busy!  I might even see if I can take some water and snacks down to the group later, if the search is still going on.

And, it's 2 am by the computer clock, so I am going to TRY to go to bed again, and see if I can at least salvage a LITTLE sleep.

Which, the way things are going, means Husband will be up at 3ish to finish some job...  : /

(Update:  At approximately 9:30ish a.m., the woman was found, and is safe, so the end to this story was happy, if nothing else!)

The computer is holding... (frantically knocking on wood...)  So, what have I been up to?

Of late:

I quit one of my volunteer jobs, I am still in the group, just not in a leadership role.  I was finding it, sadly, a waste of time, doing studying and work for no good reason that I could see, and there was a very pointed personality conflict between myself and another person, so I decided, enough is more than enough, and left.  This also lead to my finally deleting my Facebook page, which on a scale of importance, I placed about two degrees above absolute zero.

Well, maybe one...

But I am still there, but in a support position.  We shall see if this alleviates some of the antagonism between the two of us.  I figure, I still want to help, so if I am a "grunt", I can just show up, do, and leave, I don't have to argue about every little thing.  Might be a cop-out, but at least I won't be grinding my teeth to the roots...  Adding to that, a lot of the things I have to do for this group include computer work, and my computer chooses when to work...

It wasn't going well.

I haven't taken a picture of it yet, but I have a fairly nice garden growing.  With the exception of a mole/gopher that is going through the pumpkin area.  I am getting ready to do something highly lethal to this creature if it doesn't leave my plants alone.  On the bright side, I planted, and after some discussion with Husband (read: I am doing it this way, dammit), I just water the plants, not using a sprinkler, but the hose, and I am pleased to report at this time, I have very few weeds.  It's supposed to rain tonight or tomorrow, so I will probably have a sudden infestation, but at least I am holding my own, for now.

I lucked out and got some fresh hay for this season.  The hay that I had was getting a bit... old and losing the seed, and had mice in it, and and and... So I had planned on getting some new hay.  Well, Mom and Dad negotiated with a neighbor that wanted the hay they had standing, and they "sold" it for 20 bales for me.  I got fresh hay, they got hay for their horses (I think), and we all seem to be happy about it. I have one old bale left, and it will be put in the chicken house temporarily, as I have run out of cedar shavings.  It works, in a pinch...

I am going to be trimming llama hooves this week, hopefully.  This could be an experience.  I haven't done this before, so, erk.  We shall see.  First time for everything I guess.  If it gets too extreme, I still have the name and phone number of the guy that sheared and trimmed for me last year.  (I will be shearing, too, but it might just be for the relief of the llama overheating.  I only have done a very little shearing, so getting nice fiber for my spinning might be a long shot for me...)  For the obvious reason I can't take pictures and shear, this will probably be a before and after deal.  Blogs as events warrant.

I have a lot to do around the house and place tomorrow, if I keep my brain somewhere close to actually being in the "on" position, maybe I will take the camera with me and get some pictures for the blog.  Hope springs ever eternal.  And maybe be able to peruse/comment on other blogs, for a change.

Where have you heard THAT before???

Clean chicken feet. And rain. LOTS of rain.

Shortish blog.

Husband was worried about me walking the hill today (we had the water running down the hill again...), so he suggested that I put chips from the pile we received in the hen yard, making it chips, not mud.  This will be good, so the chickens aren't (ahem) deep in mud, and the llamas (who are fed in the hen yard), aren't hock deep.  I try to keep it clean, but there has been so much rain, it washed most of what I had put there away.

I don't think that will happen this time, for a little bit anyway.  Husband decided to speed up the process, by using the bucket... on the backhoe.  I had  a HUGE amount of the chips to move.  I now have about a 4 to 5 inch deep layer, and it will pack down nicely, it looks like.

I also found out that I have several muscles that I really didn't know I had.  And quite frankly, wish I didn't know about now... Ow.  The legs were fine.  The arms are a little iffy, and the shoulders and back. Oh, my.

I am going to need Tylenol tonight, folks...

And wish me luck.  Remember when I said that I was glad of the new people in the one volunteer group?  Still am, but I am going to have to get her to communicate with me a bit more. Boss wants me to do performances, and then we play email tag on who, where and how long.  I just found out she'd like me to have one more person along, and I had already had to talk like a good fella to get a car pool so I didn't have to drive, (it's through Portland, and I don't do big cities at all well).  The driver said, oh, Boss had said X was going too, and I don't have enough room for three.  I said, nooo, there's only two.  So, I am going to let Boss know that I had only planned for two, and we can work on the other person NEXT performance.

The joys of new systems.  Gah.

And I think I am officially sick of the rain.  There is pond algae growing on our driveway.

That's just not right...
