Read a good movie lately?

I went to a big chain bookstore, (Husband and I can't remember which one, sadly, it is no more), and they had this section I would always look at while I was there.

"Read a Good Movie Lately?"

And they would have the latest movies out, either from the book it was based on, or a book, written from the movie.   I would usually pick up at least one or two, especially if it was sci-fi.

I really missed that.

I happened to be at a book sale we frequent, and they had "The Revenant".  I picked it up, and it started me thinking... I know there are lots of movies based on books... Why not just catch them as I find them?  I have even started a little section of my library, where the "book to movie section" is.  I have the more obvious, like the Hobbit, some newer, like Gone Girl, and Girl with a Pearl Earring.  Some classics, To Kill A Mockingbird, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn...

I might read all of them, might find I have no interest, and go to the next book... And eventually, I might see the movie, too...

The odd thing, I just finished The Revenant.  It was quite good, if more than a bit gorey.  But, as I have noticed, the book and movie differ.

I haven't seen the movie.  So, how do I know?

Husband told me he'd seen the movie, one time while I was off and away.  So I chatted with him about the book, and said, oh, it was awful that his rifle was stolen, and Husband said, yes, and losing his son...

His son?  I looked blank.

Yes, Husband says, his son Hawk.

Uh.  No... No children in the book.

Oh, Hawk is an adult child.

Uh, no, Husband, there was no adult child, no child child, and no Hawk...

Now I really want to see the movie, to see what he's talking about!!!

Movies for fun and learning, reverb 24

Good day from Hepzibah Catherine Marielle Funk, The Lady Formerly known as Cat.
At least today!

(LOOOOOVE it!!!)

Watched two movies this weekend, on opposite ends of the spectrum.  On the fluffy end, was Tooth Fairy, with Julie Andrews, and The Rock.  Complete and total fluff, just a fun bit of mind candy.  The Rock sure can act, he emotes straight from A to B...  Ahem.

Then Mom and I went to see "The King's Speech".  Wow.  No. Let me rephrase that.

WOW!

I am not going to go into a full fledged review tonight, possibly more later, but if you get the chance to see it, GO!  Do not walk, RUN

The actors were amazing.  But I must say, there is one scene that just tickled me, it was so "British" in reaction.  The King and Queen show up at the house of the man that is helping the king.  The wife is gone for the afternoon, and returns early. (The husband hasn't told the wife that he's assisting the king with his speech problem.)  The poor wife walks in on the queen, in the woman's kitchen.  After a bit of protocol addressed to the wife, and the husband coming out with a "gee honey, I'm helping the king out, could you be a sport about it" attitude, the poor wife just looks absolutely shocked, and asks... If they are staying for dinner.

I have no idea why this amused me so, except that I could sort of see something like that in my house... My husband, as far as I know, however, has no work set up for the House of Windsor, that I know of.  Pity, that.

My only one teensy, tiny problem with the movie, I know so many of the actors from other roles, I had to consciously block out, "he IS NOT playing Cadfael", and so on.  I have this same problem with other actors I am used to, in other roles...  If the movie is good (like this one), the dissonance leaves fairly quickly...  Thank Goodness!

Prompt: Everything's OK. What was the best moment that could serve as proof that everything is going to be alright? And how will you incorporate that discovery into the year ahead?

Without resorting to a Tom Petty ditty, I don't know how to answer this question.

I guess because all my animals made it (so far) through the winter this year?  That no one I love has been hurt or sick or died?  This question is just so... UGH!  I don't know how to answer.

These are the frustrating kind.  Those questions like you had in grade school that you had to write a paragraph, and it was half your grade.  This one is half my blog, and it sucketh, yea verily!

How will I incorporate the discovery?  Well, by continuing to feed and care for my animals, associate with my loved ones, and hope that the next question doesn't make me feel like I took an overdose of DUH pills!

Bad, but not too bad, and reading good movies.

Ok, scale day. I didn't exercise as much as I should have. (Planning is everything. I decide, oh, I will exercise when I get home. It was DARK when I got home. I am not going to trip over things, or get eaten by a cougar, and usually, I just made dinner, ate, and went to bed.) But, I figured it would be a lot worse than it is...

Gained .2 pounds.

Not happy about it, but it's not the end of the world. Just a little more on MY end, is all. Pbbt.

So, have you watched any good (or not) movies of late? I haven't, but I just read a book, that a movie was based on. I really enjoy reading the book before I see the movie, as it gives me a deeper background of the characters. It can also confuse things. For example, when the Harry Potter films have diverged from the books, trying to explain the difference to Husband and Mom, who kind of enjoy the movies, but haven't read the books, was interesting.

So, who is Winky, and why are you upset that she isn't in the movie?

I also notice, quite often, I like the books better than the movie. I guess the "movie in my head" tends to be more vibrant and 'filled out'. I mean, there's a budget involved with the movie, the only limit in a book is my imagination! And since I read sci-fi a lot, this is even more pronounced.

I had heard both good and bad about the movie "The Postman" with Kevin Costner, but haven't yet seen it. I decided to get the book, and read it. It was pretty good, and I will probably go get the movie eventually. (It was sure panned by the critics...) I also noticed on YouTube that Tom Petty played a minor part in the movie. The funny thing, what they showed... Wasn't in the book. Odd.

The movie "Twilight" is another one. I am mildly interested in reading the book, and I want to see the movie, because I have been several places where it was filmed. It isn't the top of my to do list, but I will probably give it time. One of these days, anyway.

And it's not limited to theater movies. I love the Cadfael series, then found out it was on OPB. I must say, they did try to make it as much like the books as possible.

There have been exceptions to this, however. I liked the "Murder, She Wrote" series on television, but I have read several of the books... More accurately, I have tried to read the books. Haven't found one that I can get interested in.

And I adore Perry Mason. But I have watched the shows so much, the books seem sort of... a waste of effort. I know the man wrote LOTS of books, I should see how many were NOT made into television shows, maybe that would let me read them without the "yeah, I know, X did it with the poker because he wanted his Mom's property..."

Maybe it's just that I like to read... Mom tells me the story that I kept talking about all my friends when I was small. She thought I was talking about my stuffed animals. Delving a bit further, she found out I was referring to my books.

So. Read any good movies lately?
